YouTube-slayer exits beta sans swords

Hulu, the joint video venture from NBCU and News Corp., will finally leave beta testing Wednesday, but it will do so without the support of two major networks.

Hulu, which spent more than a year planning and testing, will be able to offer users TV shows, movies and some sports. But it won't feature content from ABC or CBS, two omissions that could undermine the site's bid to become the premier destination for online video.

"We won't stop until we have everything in terms of premium content. That is our mission," Hulu CEO Jason Kilar told The New York Times. "I just think back to the fact that 24 months ago, there wasn't anything online legally in terms of full TV episodes or films. In just 17 weeks, we have gone from nothing to over 200 premium titles."

Tackling YouTube also will require Hulu to change the minds of users with respect to online video. Despite widespread use of the web to view video, many users continue to see the medium as a venue for short-form, amateur videos rather than professional content.
