Can Nokia do the right thing?

There are a lot of things users can do with mobile phones besides talking, but getting that message out has been something of a challenge. Enter director Spike Lee, who Nokia tapped to helm its latest user-generated project.

Lee, who is best known for directing "Do The Right Thing" and "Malcolm X," will help put together a short film made by Nokia users on their mobile devices.

The project is part of an effort by Nokia to position itself as an entertainment company.

"This is not a marketing gimmick," Craig Coffey, Nokia's VP for North American marketing told The New York Times. "The notion of social networking and entertainment is real."

Nokia, which said it surveyed 9,000 of its customers, believes that by 2012 one in four of its customers will be engaged in producing content with their mobile devices.
