Get your widget on MySpace, for a price

Facebook is the widget king, but MySpace, in its never-ending quest to outdo Facebook, is hoping to steal the crown, perhaps at the cost of developers.

According to Social Times, MySpace is charging developers anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 to have their widgets featured on the network's widget hub page. Social Times' Nick O'Neil predicts the fees will make an already difficult climb much steeper for small developers trying to gain eyeballs.

"Want to get more exposure for your application or build up your user base? You'll have to pay MySpace if you want to do that in the short-run and will have choose between using MySpace and other ad networks in the space in the long-run," O'Neil said.

When it launched, MySpace's widget hub was a directory, listing the applications by category while the widgets with the most installations were featured the most prominently. Then, MySpace began using a system that promoted the most recently uploaded widgets, but that backfired when developers began to resubmit their applications so they'd rise to the top.
