In Google’s quest to make YouTube profitable, it has added a new demographics feature to the YouTube analytics tool, giving advertisers a better breakdown of which age groups are watching.
YouTube launched its Insight analytics tool in March, allowing anyone with an account to break down viewership by region and also compare their videos to others in the same category. The new demographics tab offers statistics on age group, gender or a combination of the two. The information is provided to Google when users register with YouTube.
"As with Insight's other features, we hope this new information helps you learn how to create more compelling content that best engages the audiences you want to reach," YouTube product manager Nick Jakobi wrote on the company blog.
According to Jakobi, YouTube has already seen users change their upload schedules to get videos online at the time their viewers are most likely to watch.
The demographics feature comes shortly after the recently launched buzz targeting, a system that tries to predict which videos are about to become viral sensations.
