Google ad deal derailed by Russian authorities

Not everything Google touches turns to gold. The mega search giant was recently barred by Russian authorities from buying online ad service ZAO Begun, according to the Associated Press.

Similar to U.S. antitrust law, Russia's Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS) was responsible for the decision to nix Google's $140 million purchase bid. FAS has not yet released a statement as to why it decided to kill the Google deal.

ZAO Begun is part of popular Russian web portal and search engine Rambler Media Ltd. Google's attempt to purchase the ad service has been underway since July, according to the AP, as part of a strategy to capitalize on Russia's burgeoning digital ad industry.

Based in Moscow, ZAO Begun has been likened to Google's AdSense program by providing contextual ad services to advertisers, websites and advertising agencies. ZAO became a subsidiary of Rambler Media in 2007.

Google representatives told the AP they were disappointed the deal didn't go through and they were reviewing other options.
