Is NBC now fully digital?

NBC Universal's chief digital officer, George Kliavkoff, announced he will leave NBC at the end of the year, citing a lack of need for his position.

"I think much of my work here is done," Kliavkoff wrote in an email sent to NBC staff on Monday.

Kliavkoff was hired in August 2006 to help move NBC from a traditional media company toward digital. Although he expected his work would take close to five years, digital media is now a part of every unit of NBC, Kliavkoff wrote in his email.

During his tenure at NBCU, Kliavkoff saw record page views during NBC's coverage of the Beijing Olympics and the launch of Hulu, which is now the sixth most-visited 19427 video streaming site.

NBCU's digital revenue will top $1 billion in 2009, which is more than double its digital revenue from 2006, according to The New York Times. Yet some doubt NBC's transition into a full-on digital media company is complete.

"My guess is that they're still finding their way at NBC," said Dennis Miller, general partner at Spark Capital. "It’s still a slow-growing process."
